Open Kitchen Design Ideas to Transform Your Space

Thinking about changing your kitchen layout to an open plan design? You’re not alone. Open plan kitchen design has been growing in popularity recently because of the way it brings together the living, dining and cooking areas of your home, creating a true social hub. For modern living and a natural flow, open kitchen design ideas are peerless.

In this guide, the Bayliss team have brought their experience and expertise together to help you better understand the potential of an open plan kitchen. From layout and materials to lighting and zoning, we’ve pulled together the inspiration and ideas you need to help you create an open kitchen design that works beautifully for your home.

What Is an Open Plan Kitchen?

The term ‘open plan kitchen’ describes a style of layout that merges the kitchen space with adjoining living and dining areas, so it flows as one continuous space. Rather than being separated by walls or doors, an open approach creates a more connected, sociable space. The kitchen is often called the busiest room in the house. With an open approach, it can be considered the true heart of the home.

Some of the reasons open kitchen design ideas are increasing in popularity, particularly in modern homes, are that it allows for better use of space, improves the flow of natural light and provides a much more flexible layout. It helps make day-to-day living more practical, whether you’re cooking, entertaining guests or spending time with family, as it can all take place in one cohesive space.

To bring this to life, here are some of our favourite open kitchen ideas to consider.

Our Top Open Plan Kitchen Design Ideas

Go Fully Integrated

Fully integrated units are perfect for open plan kitchens as they help create an uncluttered look that blends into the wider living space. Built-in appliances sit flush with cabinet doors, keeping the finish clean and consistent throughout. At Bayliss, we work with quality, leading brands such as NEFF, Nolte Kuchen and BORA to ensure your integrated solutions look good and stand the test of time.

Classic Shaker Look

Classic shaker designs, featuring a recessed central panel within a framed door but little other decoration, bring a timeless, balanced look to open plan kitchens. The simple look brings subtle detail without overwhelming the space, making it simple to carry across into the dining and living areas. Shaker kitchens work well to create warmth, character and long-lasting appeal.

Keep It Cohesive

A cohesive design is particularly important in open plan kitchen layouts, because multiple different areas will be visible at once. Choosing colours, materials and finishes that work across the whole area ensures your finished installation has a pleasing consistency and uninterrupted visual flow. This avoids a disjointed feel between your kitchen, dining and living spaces.

Add an Island

Who doesn’t love a kitchen island? Adding one is an effective way to immediately enhance an open plan kitchen. It creates a natural break point between the kitchen and dining area while delivering plentiful extra worktop space, storage areas and even seating in a breakfast bar style. In fact, the potential an island offers is vast, as you can discover in our kitchen island ideas blog.

Use Statement Lighting

Statement lighting is a simple but strong open kitchen design idea that immediately defines your space and adds visual interest. Pendant lights over islands or dining areas can act as a focal point, helping to break up the layout. We’ve covered this in much more detail in our kitchen lighting ideas article.

Soft Neutral Tones

Open plan spaces always look better if the decor isn’t trying too hard. Soft neutral tones are popular as they create light, calm and cohesive spaces. Colours such as whites, greys and beiges reflect natural light and make the space feel larger, providing a blank canvas that lets your lighting and other features define the space across kitchen, dining and living areas.

Luxury Worktops

Worktops always help to define the look of a kitchen, and this is no truer than in the space created by an open plan kitchen. Choosing a quality work surface immediately elevates the feel of the space while ensuring durability for long-term daily use. At Bayliss, we work with leading brands such as Cosentino and Dekton, offering a wide variety of patterns and finishes for your open plan kitchen design.

Make It Matte

Talking of finishes, a matte look across many or all surfaces and features can be excellent for open plan kitchens, as it helps to reduce glare and create a softer, more refined look across your new, larger space. Unlike gloss finishes, matte cabinetry will absorb light rather than reflecting it, which can make your overall design feel balanced and understated without compromising on its high-end, luxury appearance.

Built-In Seating

Built-in seating is a great way to make the most of an open plan kitchen, particularly in larger spaces. Whether incorporated into an island as we mentioned earlier, or positioned along a wall, it creates a dedicated area for dining, working or socialising. It helps define zones within the layout (which we’ll talk more about shortly) without breaking up a cohesive flow across the room.

Choose Clean Lines

Clean lines are a key feature of a successful open plan kitchen. Simple cabinetry, handleless units and uncluttered layouts all help to maintain a streamlined look. By avoiding too much detailing, you’ll create a calm, modern space that flows naturally between the different areas.

Flooring to Define the Space

Flooring plays an important part in open kitchen design ideas, helping to subtly define different areas. Picking a high-quality floor creates a strong visual foundation, allows the space to feel cohesive and ensures your flooring stands up to rigorous daily use for many years to come. We work in partnership with trusted companies such as Karndean to offer durable, stylish flooring.

Define Zones

There may be no walls or doors in your new open plan space, but it’s still important to create clear zones to define different parts of the room. This can be achieved through layout, furniture placement, flooring choices and lighting, helping to give cooking, dining and living areas their own character without detracting from the consistency of the overall room.

The Benefits of an Open Plan Kitchen

We hope our open kitchen design ideas have shown you the range of practical and lifestyle improvements that a well-designed space can provide. Here’s a summary of just some of the biggest benefits:

  • Better Connected Space: Open plan layouts make it easier to stay connected with family or guests, whether cooking, working or relaxing.
  • Brighter, More Spacious Feel: With fewer walls blocking light and more space for windows and skylights, open kitchens feel bright and welcoming.
  • Great Hosting Spaces: Get cooking while chatting with family and friends at the same time, removing the isolation associated with separate kitchens.
  • Flexible Furniture Layouts: Without as many walls, you’ll have more freedom to arrange tables, seating and storage in a way that suits you.
  • Improved Sightlines: Open layouts give clearer views, helping you keep an eye on children or simply creating a more relaxed environment.

15 Kitchen Lighting Ideas for Every Style

The right lighting can make a significant difference to the feel and aesthetic of your kitchen, brightening the space, creating depth or highlighting your favourite features. If you don’t know where to start with choosing the best lighting, we have covered some kitchen lighting ideas below to give you a good starting point.

If you want help from experienced specialists to design a kitchen, including all lighting, Bayliss is your ideal solution. Visit our showroom to speak to our team.

Our Top Kitchen Lighting Design Ideas

1. Kitchen Island Lighting

Using hanging lighting over a kitchen island is a simple yet effective way to draw the eye. The ‘rule of three’ is a popular choice for over-island lighting, using three hanging pendants equal distances apart to create a sense of balance. The central location of kitchen islands means these pendants can often provide ample lighting for the whole room.

2. Sleek Under Cabinet Lights

Under-cabinet lights are an attractive and modern addition to any kitchen. These lowlights help to even out light levels in your kitchen, providing full visibility for cooking and reducing harsh shadows under cabinetry. Large, full-panel lights or simple strip and spotlights are available to suit your specific requirements and choice of interior design.

3. Uplighting for Ambience

Uplighting is a simple yet effective way to add more light to your kitchen. Uplights are typically strip lights for consistent lighting, rather than spotlights, and can be placed on top of cabinets and tall appliances, such as fridges. Uplighting reflects off pale or white ceilings, reducing the number of lights required for a bright, usable space.

4. Low-Hanging Pendant Lights

Pendants can make a big statement, adding texture, colour or interest to kitchens. There are pendant styles available to match any kitchen style, from natural-coloured scandi designs to metallic, architectural shapes. Low-hanging lights work best over surfaces, such as tables or peninsulas, where they don’t need to be directly walked around.

5. Brighten with Skylights

Natural lighting is an ideal way to bring brightness into your space without the need for continual electricity use. During the day, skylights deliver plenty of light and brightness to your kitchen. To make your skylights stand out in the evenings, add modern strip lighting recessed into the space for an additional, subtle lighting source.

6. Elegant Chandeliers

Evoke true luxury with an elegant chandelier in your kitchen. Surprisingly, chandeliers work for kitchens across a range of styles – from providing contrast in industrial spaces to expanding on the luxe feel of a modern kitchen. Chandeliers are available in a range of sizes, from compact models to larger, sprawling crystal designs.

7. Cohesive Lighting Styles

Most kitchens use more than one type of lighting to make the most of the space, from skylights to pendants to under-cabinet lighting. Being intentional about your lighting choices can help you to create a cohesive final look. For example, matching the colour temperature of your different lighting methods can prevent disharmony in your kitchen.

8. Bold Oversized Lighting

If you prefer playful kitchen lighting design ideas, opting to go big is one way to make your kitchen stand out. An oversized light, such as a novelty pendant, can be an effective way to create a statement piece in your kitchen. Bold lighting options are amplified in smaller kitchens, which is to their benefit, particularly when combined with more minimalist design choices, so your lighting can make a big impression.

9. Match Lighting to Style

If your kitchen already has a strong sense of style, you don’t want to muddy the waters with your lighting. Choose lighting that matches the existing appearance of your kitchen for a cohesive, charismatic final look. For example, combining modern lighting with modern kitchens or opting for more vintage-looking lighting for traditional kitchens.

10. Layered Lighting Effects

Layered lighting is a practical way to add dimension to kitchen spaces, using multiple lighting sources to introduce additional drama to your environment. Combining under-cabinet and base cabinet lighting with pendant lighting, for example, can create a ‘floating’ effect for your kitchen while providing plenty of light for day-to-day use.

11. Base Cabinet Lighting

Base cabinet lighting is an excellent supplemental lighting option for your kitchen, helping you achieve an attractive and modern appearance. This type of lighting can also help to introduce softness to your kitchen, while reducing the requirement for overhead lights to create the perfect mood or for that 1 am fridge raid.

12. Accent Lighting for Kitchen Walls

If you have particular areas of your kitchen you would like to highlight or spaces where extra lighting is needed, accent lighting is an ideal solution. Wall-mounted lights offer a secondary lighting option that works well for galley kitchens or smaller spaces, offering targeted illumination where you need it without overwhelming the space.

13. Lighting Controls

In-wall lighting controls and smart lighting systems offer complete freedom to create the mood that you want with your lighting, offering far more adaptability beyond an on/off system. You can choose from a traditional dimmer switch or remote control system to change the feel of your kitchen in seconds, or create your own flow in an app to change the mood of your lighting throughout the day and night.

14. Chic Black Lighting

Black lighting offers a stark, modern contrast to many kitchen designs, from minimalist whites to wood and earth tones. Choose simple black lighting options to enhance the space, creating a strong foundation for your kitchen design. You can combine black lighting with different kitchen fixtures, like taps or cabinet handles, to create a cohesive look.

15. Stylish Table Lamps

Table lamps may seem better suited to living rooms and bedrooms, but this lighting option can also provide an attractive addition to your kitchen and dining spaces. Wireless, rechargeable lamps in particular are excellent, safe alternatives to candles that can be placed anywhere, providing a practical way to create mood lighting at kitchen tables or on islands.

Creative Kitchen Island Ideas for Every Home

Your kitchen island is at the centre of one of the most important rooms in your home. Offering extra cooking space, additional storage and a place to entertain, picking the right island can make a big difference to the final look and feel of your kitchen. We explore a few kitchen island ideas below to give you some inspiration for your own home.

Our specialist team has extensive experience in designing luxury kitchens for our customers, including kitchen islands. If you’d like our expert opinion, visit our showroom to speak to our designers.

Embrace a Handleless Design

Handleless cabinetry on your kitchen island is the perfect match for minimalist, architectural kitchens, providing the smooth surface and clean lines that help to open up the space. Whether your entire kitchen is handleless or you’d like to create better flow for your island specifically, a handleless design is a strong choice.

Brighten with White Tones

White and cream tones are an easy way to lighten up your kitchen, creating an airy feel to the space. If you have a relatively small kitchen and an island will take up significant square footage, lighter tones are an effective way to prevent your room from feeling crowded. Whites also reflect light more effectively to further add to the spacious feel.

Experiment with New Textures

Get the most out of your island by making it a statement feature in your kitchen with new textures and tactile experiences. Woods, stones or other textured, natural surfaces can add vital dimension to your kitchen. Textures can be one of the more out-there kitchen island design ideas or an understated addition to your home, depending on your choice of design.

Create a Two-Level Island

Two-level islands provide all the advantages of a traditional kitchen island with the added benefit of separation between two spaces. For example, islands can have a raised space in the middle or on one side for cooking or placing decorations, while providing a lower table space for eating. This enables your island to be multipurpose, introducing additional flexibility into your kitchen.

Make a Statement with Lighting

Lighting can be a powerful way to transform your entire kitchen. Utilising your island as your primary lighting space can offer you greater versatility in the lighting you can use. For example, lower pendants with matching shades, usually following the ‘rule of three’, where three pendants are used, can be placed over an island to make a strong statement while enhancing kitchen usability.

Opt for Matte Finishes

A matte finish is an immediate way to elevate the look of your kitchen. Using matte paint for cabinetry is a quick and easy way to immediately add a luxurious feel to kitchens, whether you mattify all your cabinets or just those on your island. To really maximise the clean look, you can opt for matte worktops for full cohesion throughout your kitchen.

Tile the Base for Added Style

Using tile for the base of your kitchen island creates a visual focal point for your kitchen that is as practical as it is attractive. Tiling can be matched to existing backsplashes in the kitchen, or you can choose a unique tile design or pattern to really make a statement, from bold and bright colours to earthy, natural tones.

Built-in Storage and Seating

Installing a kitchen island offers the perfect opportunity to add more utility to your kitchen. Closed islands can include additional cabinetry to maximise the storage in your space, while an open or partly open island enables stools or chairs to be used in the kitchen. Open shelving can also be incorporated into a kitchen island for books, pottery and more.

Go for Shaker Style

Kitchen islands can work as well in traditional kitchens as they do in modern designs. Choosing a shaker-style island gives you all the functionality you need while matching your desired aesthetic for your kitchen. Elaborate drawer fronts and cabinetry can add vital detail to these styles of islands, ensuring full cohesion with the rest of your kitchen.

Incorporate Cooking Appliances

Integrating cooking appliances into your kitchen island enhances functionality, providing valuable space where items like dishwashers or under-counter fridges can be placed. At Bayliss, we partner with high-end brands like NEFF and BORA, providing bespoke kitchen island solutions with luxury appliances that match the aesthetic of your home.

Add Elegance with a Dekton Worktop

If you don’t know where to start when looking at kitchen ideas with islands, choosing a great worktop is an ideal first choice. An attractive and durable worktop creates the perfect first impression for your kitchen. We partner with Cosentino and Dekton for many of our kitchen designs, offering smooth surfaces made from compressed natural materials for a distinctive and luxurious finish that works well as backsplashes and worktops across your kitchen.

Benefits of a Kitchen Island

A kitchen island is a highly beneficial addition to any kitchen, whether you are looking to expand upon an existing layout or want to design a brand-new kitchen entirely. These benefits include:

  • Additional working space: Gain additional worktop room, ensuring you have enough space for even the most complicated dishes
  • More storage: Add cabinetry or open shelving to enhance the storage solutions in your kitchen
A place for entertainment: Add chairs or stools to provide a space for entertainment in your kitchen
  • Division of space: Create a clear divide between your kitchen and dining space in combined rooms
  • Integrated appliances and fixtures: Add a dishwasher, sink or digital hob to your island, offering more spaces for placement without reducing existing cabinetry or worktop space

10 Creative L-Shaped Kitchen Ideas for Every Space

L-shaped kitchens are a classic design choice that maximise space while still providing freedom of movement and allowing plenty of light into your kitchen. While an L-shaped kitchen may have less storage space than its U-shaped counterparts, clever design by kitchen experts like Bayliss can ensure you achieve the aesthetic you want without sacrificing functionality.

At Bayliss, we have been creating beautiful kitchens and bathrooms as a trusted name in luxurious design since 1929. In this guide, we will explore different L-shaped kitchen ideas to inspire you, from storage to appliances.

Kitcehn with wooden features, an island and low-hanging lights

What is an L-Shaped Kitchen?

An L-shaped kitchen, as the name suggests, is cabinetry and appliances arranged into an ‘L’ shape, also known as a corner kitchen. L-shaped kitchens can either be placed against two walls, providing ample floor space for cooking and entertaining, or can be utilised as an effective divider for a combined kitchen/dining or open living space, providing additional options for seating.

Our Top 10 L-Shaped Kitchen Ideas

1. Incorporate a Breakfast Bar or Peninsula

A peninsula is an effective way to add more functional counter space to an L-shaped kitchen while doubling up as a seating area. Breakfast bars can either be open with table-style legs, allowing air and light to flow through the space by creating a solid division, or installed with additional cabinetry to expand your storage options.

2. Use White to Brighten the Space

L-shaped kitchens are often utilised for smaller spaces, where a U-shaped kitchen would not work due to size constraints. As such, it’s important to use the right interior decor techniques to try to brighten and enlarge the kitchen space. Opt for white cabinets, or combine darker cabinets with a bright, white worktop for an illuminating contrast.

3. Opt for Gloss Finishes

Gloss finishes are a simple yet effective method to bring additional light into your kitchen through reflection. While matte surfaces absorb light, particularly in darker tones, gloss finishes bounce light back into your kitchen space, helping it to appear larger. Gloss worktops, in particular, are an attractively modern way to reflect lighting fixtures while adding a touch of luxury to your kitchen.

4. Maximise Internal Storage

Storage is vital in any kitchen, and maximising the space you have is even more important. To get more from your L-shaped kitchen, consider integrating some clever storage solutions such as divided drawers, integrated racks for pot lids and corner cabinets. This enables you to maintain a tidy kitchen where everything has its place, preserving those clean and elegant lines.

5. Highlight a Feature Appliance

A beautiful appliance is more than just a functional addition to your kitchen – it’s a statement all of its own. At Bayliss, we partner with luxury brands to integrate standout appliances into our designs. This includes NEFF’s innovative, streamlined range and BORA’s professional-grade luxury appliances, providing just the right highlight to draw the eye in L-shaped kitchens.

6. Choose a Vibrant Colour Scheme

Opting for a vibrant colourway is a powerful way to enhance an L-shaped kitchen design by putting your cabinetry at the forefront. Choosing colourful cabinets instead of bright tiles can bring unity to your kitchen, whether your preference is deep jewel tones or eye-catching primary colours. Alternatively, you can go neutral with your cabinets and choose vibrant worktops for a subtler pop of colour.

7. Simplify the Design

In some cases, a little can go a long way when it comes to designing an L-shaped kitchen. Simplifying your design and dialling back to the basics can make a big impact while keeping everything clean and streamlined. Choosing appliances that blend into your kitchen, such as an integrated fridge freezer, can help you to keep things simple.

8. Include an Island

An island is an excellent way to add multifunctional space to any kitchen, but it is particularly valuable for adding more substance to an L-shaped kitchen. Islands can help create a natural stopping point for kitchens, while offering plenty of opportunities to entertain. An island also presents the potential for more storage and counter space.

9. Go for Sleek Worktops

Sleek, consistent worktops add flow to your L-shaped kitchen, making the transition from one wall to the next less jarring. At Bayliss, we partner with top countertop brands, including Dekton and Cosentino, to offer luxurious, sleek worktops that make a statement without overwhelming your kitchen. You could even extend your sleek worktop into your splashbacks for a unified, seamless final look.

10. Consider the Kitchen Work Triangle

When planning your kitchen, it’s worth considering the kitchen work triangle – a design concept that recommends an imaginary triangle between the sink, the cooker and the fridge as the three key working areas when cooking. Our design team at Bayliss pay close attention to this concept when designing L-shaped kitchens, making it effortless to transition between each station without feeling crowded.

Benefits of an L-Shaped Kitchen

There are numerous benefits to choosing an L-shaped kitchen for your home. These include:

  • Freedom of movement: L-shaped kitchens provide excellent freedom of movement, without being hemmed in on three sides.
  • Making the most of smaller spaces: If you have a small space for your kitchen, opting for an L-shape instead of a U-shape enables you to get more from your space without making it too cramped.
  • Increasing counter space: Combine an L-shaped kitchen with a peninsula or a kitchen island to instantly expand your existing worktop space, providing plenty of surface area for any cooking task.
  • Improving your flexibility: L-shaped kitchens are highly flexible, giving you two walls to use however you want, from coffee stations to kitchen breakfast nooks.

Timeless Kitchen Design: Expert Tips for a Classic Look

Classic Shaker Look

Choosing to outfit your kitchen cabinetry with a range of Shaker-style doors is the epitome of a timeless kitchen design. The Shaker look is one of the most recognisable designs in a kitchen with its recessed central panel in a four-piece wood frame. They have been a staple of timeless kitchen design since the mid-1700s, before gaining mass market appeal in the 1860s.

They are designed to be clean, understated and functional. The design has been around for so long and remained popular the whole time that it has already proven to be endlessly timeless.

Statement Stove

If the kitchen is the heart of the home, the heart of the kitchen is sure to be the stove. Without it, cooking will be nearly impossible and not up to the standard of quality home-cooked meals. Functionality may be the initial aspect you focus on when designing your new kitchen, but you can see this installation as another avenue of expressing yourself.

Deciding on a statement stove can turn it into the focal point and one of the main talking points of your kitchen. A popular way of doing this is by choosing a large range cooker as the basis of the design. This kind of appliance has a cemented legacy in traditional kitchens and can be taken to the next level with vintage-looking brass handles and dials.

Soft, Neutral Tones

Softer neutral tones like light greys, beiges, creams and taupe’s are the perfect baseline for any future kitchen redesigns. Choosing a strong, bold colour, like a royal blue, a pink or a red can fit your initial designs perfectly. But as the years go on and you look at changing appliances and furniture, it may be harder to find items that match.

Looking at how to design a timeless kitchen will instantly tell you about how it should look, both modern and vintage, like it could have been installed at any time. Traditional styles are more synonymous with subdued colour palettes, compared to the darker modern styles or the bright and bombastic styles from the late 20th century.

Ample Seating

Regardless of the style, creating a multifunctional kitchen design is important. Having space for a dining table, maybe a breakfast bar and even an option for a relaxed lounging zone. Creating more options like this only increases the concept of a timeless kitchen design with adaptability that can last as long as the design itself.

Having ample seating encourages congregation in the kitchen area, where evenings can be whiled away in comfort, while during the day it can become a hub of conversation, work and activities.

Elegant Home Bar

An elegant home bar adds sophistication and function to a kitchen, which will only enhance its timeless appeal. By choosing classic materials like marble, brass or a darker wood, a well-designed bar seamlessly blends into both traditional and modern aesthetics.

It can create a dedicated space for entertaining, while showcasing curated glassware and interesting spirits as stylish décor. Integrating a lighting layer along with other refined finishes will elevate the ambience without overwhelming the overall design.

By combining form and function, a home bar becomes a lasting focal point, one that enhances daily living and elevates gatherings. Its versatility ensures it remains relevant, helping anchor a kitchen in enduring, elegant design principles.

Natural Furniture

With real wood kitchens making a comeback thanks to their warmth, textures, unique designs and the evocative feeling they produce, it only makes sense that furniture is seeing the same resurgence. Natural wood kept in its pure form has the unique ability of matching various kitchen styles and colours, where it either stands out as a statement piece or blends into the lines of the kitchen space.

Timeless can still be modern. All that timelessness means is that over time, the design will age in an attractive way and remain fashionable. Using robust natural materials like wood and stone, can stand up to the wear and tear of time, while each mark or dent is a memory.

Premium Worktops

High-quality worktops play a crucial role in creating a timeless kitchen design, combining durability with elegance. Premium materials like quartz, granite, marble, wood and even stainless steel offer both beauty and long-term performance.

Quartz, for example, is low-maintenance and hygienic, available in a wide range of colours to match any kitchen style. Granite and marble bring a natural luxury with unique veining that ensures no two kitchens are alike. Wood adds warmth and character, complementing both modern and traditional designs, while stainless steel offers a sleek, industrial edge with high durability.

Choosing the right material doesn’t just enhance the kitchen’s aesthetic; it ensures it stands the test of time through daily use and evolving trends.

Eco-Friendly Choices

Making eco-friendly choices is another key to unlocking a timeless kitchen design that is both stylish and sustainable. Opting for durable, high-quality materials like bamboo, wood, reclaimed wood, certain metals or recycled glass ensures your kitchen lasts longer and reduces the need for frequent renovations.

Energy-efficient appliances and LED lighting lower energy consumption, saving money and reducing your carbon footprint. Choosing low-VOC (volatile organic compound) paints and natural finishes improves indoor air quality and creates a healthier home environment.

These sustainable decisions not only reflect a commitment to the environment but also support a classic, long-lasting design that remains as functional as it is beautiful over time. A timeless kitchen isn’t just about looks; it’s about crafting a relaxing space to enjoy for years to come.

Tailored Design

More than most kitchen designs, a timeless design should exude with your personality. Even made from new materials and appliances, it should craft the feeling of space that is lived in, with little bursts of personality that provide background on the years you have enjoyed that kitchen.

Using a bespoke design service, like we have here at Bayliss, an experienced team of designers can collaborate with you to make a one-of-a-kind, timeless kitchen design that will be perfect for years to come.

Vintage Appliances

Your chosen appliances are another avenue of your kitchen design process that can be enhanced by the use of a more vintage-style design with neutral or subdued colours. Choosing a set that is lime green, thistle purple, or sunset orange can be stunning, but what happens when one appliance breaks down? What if that colour isn’t around anymore? Or the colour has been slightly changed?

An altered tone can be picked out quickly in a bespoke kitchen, so to help with the timeless nature of this design, it may serve you better to choose a more neutral and common colour scheme for your appliances.

Happily, there are plenty of brands out there like Smeg or KitchenAid that produce cutting-edge equipment with a recognisable vintage look.

Nickel Finishes

Matte black and brass fittings are having a surge of popularity at the moment in German kitchen designs. These finishes, especially brass, can work incredibly well in a timeless design, but to really nail it…you should consider picking the most timeless finish on the market.

Nickel, or other similar silver styles, have been a mainstay with kitchen design for years, with their versatility and adaptability. There is no colour palette or overall style that nickel doesn’t suit, and it is the most reliable choice for continued elegance in a timeless kitchen design.

Textured Backsplashes

Timeless kitchen designs are based around understated elegance. Balancing the desire for eye-catching, dominating features and seamless, clean designs. Going for a timeless, smooth, natural wood look can be enhanced by using a textured backsplash.

Whether choosing the various tiling styles or brickwork, having a raised and textured backsplash can offer a form of subtle detail to make your new bespoke kitchen pop for years to come. The more intricate the tiling or stonework is, will increase the feeling of a natural handcrafted look, which can blend with the natural wood looks or offer a fabulous contrast with more modern materials.

Design Around Your Lifestyle

One of the first steps when learning how to design your timeless kitchen is to plan around your lifestyle. This will ensure that it remains functional, relevant and enjoyable for years to come. By focusing on how you cook, entertain and move through the space, you can create a layout that supports your daily routines and will remain perfect for a long time.

For example, a family-focused kitchen might prioritise open space, durable materials and easy-to-clean surfaces, while a cooking enthusiast may value high-end appliances and ample prep areas. Choosing the perfect design, neutral colour schemes and a versatile range of storage options tailored to your needs will reduce the urge for frequent updates. When a kitchen reflects your habits and values rather than passing trends, it not only feels more personal but will become timeless.

So you can find your perfect design faster, we’ve grouped our ideas by style, colour and material.

  2. Master bathroom design
  3. Black bathroom design
  4. Grey bathroom design
  5. Marble bathroom design
  6. Mirror bathroom design
  7. Shower bathroom design

Luxury modern bathroom ideas: by style

When it comes to luxury bathroom interior design, one of the best starting points can be an overall design theme. For a little expert inspiration, here are our two favourite styles for 2025: minimalism and luxury master bathrooms.

Minimalist modern luxury bathroom design

One of the top choices for luxury bathroom design in 2025 is minimalism. They create a room that feels open, light and airy, emphasising the simple luxury of space. Minimalist bathrooms tend to feature clean, uncomplicated fixtures that prioritise quality materials and construction.

Minimalist bathrooms have the added benefit of being easy to keep clean and contribute to a sense of calm, perfect for providing a soothing oasis on manic mornings or after a long day.

Master modern luxury bathroom design

A rising trend in luxury bathroom design that we’re loving is the creation of focal point master bathrooms. Taking the largest bathroom in your house and making it the design hub of your home, using standout features like wet room showers and freestanding bathtubs, is a great way to flex some creativity and craft a truly luxurious experience.

We’re head over heels for this example, with a walk-in shower, stunning freestanding tub and twin vanity sinks.

Luxury modern bathroom ideas: by colour

Use colour to create mood. Your choice of shade can make a huge difference to the overall feel of your bathroom, and certain tones help create an effortlessly luxurious feel. Some of the top picks for 2025 are black and grey.

Black modern luxury bathroom design

Black is so punchy that it’s become a luxury bathroom design trend in its own right. Whether it’s scattered lightly to create striking accents or used as a dominant shade, it adds a timeless, elegant touch to any bathroom.

The shot below is of one of our favourite examples of how black can be used to elevate bathroom design. The contrast between the white, textured walls and the rich black floor with a continuous accent wall at the far end, complemented by the black vanity sink and mirror, creates an ultra-modern, clean environment that we just adore.

“[…] we expect it [black] to be a huge trend for bathrooms in 2025. It creates immediate drama and is extra special when paired with brass.” – Linda Eyles, Linda Eyles Design

Grey modern luxury bathroom design

Another highlight of the 2025 luxury bathroom colour palette is grey. Also a timeless shade, grey is a favourite of those looking for minimalist or industrial styles in particular, but also complements warmer designs very well, especially with the addition of rich browns and accents of black.

Whether you opt for micro-cement, tiles or grey marble, grey is another perfect choice for ultra-modern luxury bathroom design.

Luxury modern bathroom ideas: by material

Making careful decisions about the materials you use in your bathroom can be a major factor in the end result. This year, marble and other natural stones, mirrors and statement shower surrounds are some of the hottest trends in luxury bathroom materials.

Marble modern luxury bathroom design

Marble, and other natural stones, are classic hallmarks of luxury design, from kitchens to bathrooms, and they’re having a major comeback in 2025. Marble is a durable, versatile material that just oozes elegance and comes in a variety of shades, making it perfect for a wide range of styles and colour preferences.

“Bathrooms are all about creating a serene retreat. By using organic materials like natural stone, textured tiles and warm wood finishes it can instantly bring that calming, spa-like feeling into your space. It’s all about embracing the beauty of nature and transforming your bathroom into a sanctuary where it can be a place for you to truly unwind.” – Amy Peltier, Peltier Interiors

Check out this example below, using two different shades of marble to create a stunning contrast, with a heavily patterned black piece on the far wall serving as an eye-catching focal point, complemented by the black plumbing features and sink surround.

Mirror modern luxury bathroom design

Mirrors serve a practical purpose in any bathroom, but they also help to reflect light around your space, making it feel brighter and larger. A 2025 ultra-modern luxury bathroom design trend that we’re all over at the moment is finding ways to make your mirror, or mirrors, a design feature in themselves. This elevates the mirror from a simple necessity to a focal point.

Whether you opt for a smaller designer piece like this captivating example, or large, wall-panel mirrors that make your bathroom feel truly larger than life, mirrors should be a consideration for any 2025 bathroom installation.

Shower modern luxury bathroom design

Next on our list of materials is showers, or more specifically, shower surrounds and wet rooms. Using specially selected materials to build a unique shower is a leading trend this year, leaning into the home spa vibe that many ultra-modern luxury bathroom designs are aimed at emulating.

Not only does using standout materials for your shower enclosure enhance the experience every time you step in for a wash, but it also makes your shower the visual highlight of your bathroom. This example uses captivating 3D-effect tiles, a frameless glass enclosure and a premium Hansgrohe brushed bronze shower head and handle.

Does a New Kitchen Add Value to Your Home?

It’s no secret that house prices in the West Midlands have risen drastically in recent years. In fact, the average house price in the UK rose by roughly £600 between January and March of 2025 alone and the average for the West Midlands was £274k as of February 2025. However, the value growth rate has slowed as the cost-of-living crisis tightens and the number of available homes has increased.

So, in the midst of slowing growth, is there anything you can do to boost the value of your home? The answer might lie in your kitchen. Now, we know what you’re thinking: ‘Does a new kitchen really add value to your home?’ Yes, it does, and the percentage increase might surprise you.

At Bayliss Bathrooms & Kitchens, we’ve been helping homeowners across the Midlands add value to their properties since 1929. In this guide, we will explain why kitchens matter more in today’s market, how much value a new kitchen can add to your home, whether you should replace or just refresh, what features to look out for and some top tips and major mistakes to avoid.

To get stuck into your West Midlands kitchen redesign right away, give our expert team a call on 0121 362 1800.

Why Kitchens Matter More in Today’s Property Market?

The COVID-19 pandemic marked a shift in homebuyer priorities. During the outbreak, housing markets ground to a halt. As the effects of the pandemic eased, the market sprang back to life, spurring a sharp rise in property prices across the UK.

Since then, growth has slowed a little, as the cost of living has continued to climb and the number of new houses on the market has increased. A cornerstone of post-pandemic buying behaviours is the search for more space. People became more accustomed to spending time at home, a pattern perpetuated further by the cost-of-living crisis. This led to a much stronger proportional price rise for larger homes than smaller ones.

Although priorities do vary slightly by region, even within the Midlands. For example, buyers in Birmingham tend to seek a balance between proximity to the city centre and the space and affordability of the outskirts. Meanwhile, buyers in Worcester seek different criteria, such as avoiding flood zones and finding property close to green spaces and local heritage sites.

However, a universal trend for buyers across the Midlands is the prioritisation of home entertainment spaces, with kitchens near the top of that list. As Clifton Private Finance, a Midlands firm providing property finance services, says:

“A beautiful kitchen completely transforms the look and feel of a home. It’s the first thing that stands out to buyers, and the last thing they remember, setting the tone and style of the rest of the property.”

How Much Value Can a New Kitchen Add?

So, the answer to the question ‘Does a new kitchen add value to your home?’ is yes, but how much value? Well, that depends on a few factors, including location and the amount you choose to spend on your new kitchen.

On a national scale, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS) found that a new kitchen could add roughly 4% to the value of your home, while other studies have suggested as much as 6%. So, because property values vary across the Midlands, the amount of your kitchen investment you stand to recoup at sale will be different depending on where your home is.

For example, the average house price in Birmingham is £232,000. So, using the RICS estimated 4%, a homeowner in Birmingham could stand to raise the value of their home by roughly £9,300. In Stratford-Upon-Avon, however, where the average house price is much higher – around £385,688 – a homeowner could increase their property value to the tune of more than £15,000 with a new kitchen.

The table below shows potential property value increases after a new kitchen installation in a few key areas across the Midlands.

LocationAvg. Property ValuePotential Value Increase with New Kitchen
Birmingham£232,000£9,280
Coventry£227,000£9,080
Worcester£253,000£10,120
Wolverhampton£211,000£8,440
Redditch£236,000£9,440
Hereford£289,000£11,560
Derby£208,000£8,320
Solihull£331,000£13,240
Tamworth£224,000£8,960
Nottingham£243,000£9,720

There are even more localised variations within cities. This second table shows fluctuations across some desirable sectors of Birmingham.

LocationAvg. Property ValuePotential Value Increase with New Kitchen
Edgbaston£388,665£15,546
Harborne£335,909£13,436
Sutton Coldfield£395,758£15,830
Cannock£232,992£9,319
Jewellery Quarter£233,273£9,330

There is a ceiling to this increase, though. While buyers will pay more for a home with a new kitchen, the amount will be limited by your area. Buyers won’t want to pay too much over the odds for a home in a lower value area, even with a new kitchen. So, before deciding your kitchen budget, get an idea of the upper end of house prices in your area, and ensure your investment is proportionate.

Should You Replace or Refresh Your Kitchen?

The next thing you might be wondering is whether you really need a whole new kitchen or whether a simple spruce up will do the trick. The answer to this will depend on a few factors. Obviously, a new kitchen has the most significant potential for price impact, as buyers will pay a premium for new. But if your kitchen is in good condition already, or you’re on a tight budget, then a simple refresh might be plenty.

To help you decide, we’ve put together these handy checklists.

Invest in a new kitchen if:

  • You’re looking for maximum return on investment
  • Your existing kitchen is outdated or worn
  • You want to incorporate new, more desirable features and appliances
  • You’re looking for a competitive edge over other sellers
  • You want to sell your home faster

Settle for a refresh if:

  • You’re on a tight budget
  • Your kitchen was recently refurbished

What Features Add the Most Value in 2025?

Now that we’ve addressed the question of ‘Does a new kitchen add value to your home?’, it’s time to consider which features will give you the best bang for your buck. Buyers will prioritise some features over others and including them in your new kitchen can help provide a higher return on investment.

Quality Worktops

Including quality worktop materials can really boost the value of your kitchen renovations. Materials such as granite, marble or quartz are highly desirable and can add a real wow factor to any kitchen. Buyers are likely to pay a higher price for homes with quality materials. This rule can also be applied to other areas of your kitchen.

Integrated Appliances

Good quality, integrated appliances give your new kitchen a much cleaner finish and will go a long way to impressing potential buyers, raising the value of your home in the process. In fact, Ideal Home suggests that integrated appliances alone could increase the value of your home by almost £2,000.

Efficient Layout

Consider the kitchen triangle: the sink, the fridge and the stove. Make sure that your layout allows easy movement between these three areas to keep it functional. But don’t forget to account for aesthetics along the way; you’re going for visual impact as well as practicality.

Breakfast Bars or Kitchen Diners

Breakfast bars and built-in kitchen diners are increasingly desirable features. They enhance the usability of your kitchen and visually break up the space. Browse our other guides for inspiration on breakfast bars and kitchen diners. According to Zoopla, an open plan space which could include bars and diners could increase your property value by as much as 5% alone.

breakfast bar in kitchen

Ample Storage

Universally, buyers value storage. Increasing the available storage space with clever compartments or simply expanding it can make your kitchen, and therefore your home, far more desirable to potential buyers. You can enhance this even further by using high-end storage with attractive finishes and soft close drawers, for example.

Lighting and Electrical Upgrades

Part of making your refurbished kitchen stand out is lighting. Touches such as under-cabinet lighting can really make a space feel brighter and larger. Simple things, like making sure there are plenty of sockets, are real boosters.

Energy-Efficient Appliances

Energy-efficient appliances are another sensible choice. These can help improve your home’s EPC rating, which real estate consultancy, Knight Frank, estimates can raise your property value by as much as 20%.

Top 3 Ways to Increase Your Home Value in Your Kitchen

Renovating your kitchen to raise your home’s value is a smart decision, but it’s key to get it right. Making mistakes could cost you, literally, but we’ll touch on that later. For now, let’s look at three tips to nail your kitchen refurbishment.

1. Plan Your Redesign Carefully

As with any large project, planning is key. Carefully map out your new kitchen, starting with the layout and moving to all the features and elements you want to include. This will save you getting bogged down and give you a clear roadmap for the whole process.

If you can, include accurate measurements in all your designs to help avoid you running into any space-related snags later.

2. Budget Accordingly

Remember how earlier we mentioned that there’s a cap on how much return you can expect on your investment? Buyers will have a limit on how much they’re willing to pay for a house based on the area. Generally, spending more on your renovation will give a greater return regarding value improvement but do your research into the upper limit of property values in your area, so you know how much to spend. A maximum budget of 8% of your property value is generally recommended.

3. Hire a professional kitchen designer

Finally, consider hiring a professional kitchen designer. They will be able to leverage a wealth of experience to make sure your investment goes further. A designer can take on board your goals for the renovation as well as your budget and desired aesthetic, and produce something that makes the most of each. A professionally designed kitchen is likely to add more value to your home than a DIY design. Read our guide, for more information about why you should consider a professional kitchen designer.

What are the 3 Worst Mistakes to Avoid?

Now we’ve covered what to do, we’ll look at what not to do. Here are our top three mistakes to avoid when renovating your kitchen.

1. Neglecting Functionality

‘Form over function’ is a bad motto when it comes to kitchen renovations. Your beautiful new kitchen won’t be of much value to anyone unless it works, so make sure to carefully consider layout and functionality before getting stuck into design details. This means remembering to integrate all the practical features of a good kitchen and ensuring they’re well placed for easy use.

2. Unusual Colours

Just because you love your bright orange walls and contrasting purple floors doesn’t mean everyone will. The best way to maximise return on investment in your kitchen is to reach a compromise between the colour palette you want and the shades you think potential buyers will also like, or at least not find unpleasant. Research from the US suggests that kitchens painted in charcoal grey or deep graphite could command an extra $2,512, or £1,893 (at time of writing). This is just one example, but it demonstrates how impactful colour can be.

3. Corner Cutting

Last but not least, don’t cut corners. It can be tempting to try to save money or time by choosing cheaper materials or appliances, or by taking on elements of your refurbishment yourself that you may not be experienced enough to handle. Getting these things wrong could compromise the overall feel of your kitchen, making it feel cheap or poorly executed.

How to renovate your bathroom

As with a lot of DIY projects, there’s a proper order to tackling your bathroom remodelling to save you time and prevent you from having to redo work. So, pay attention, stick to the plan and you’ll be just fine.

This 10-step guide covers everything you need to renovate your bathroom, from initial design to finishing touches.

Step 1 – Layout

Before you can get stuck into the meat of your renovations, you need to decide on your layout. If you’re happy with your existing layout, and all you want is a redesign, then this step is easy. Although you should still draw out your plans just to make sure you’re happy with the way they look.

If you want to rearrange your layout, sketch it out with measurements for how you want everything to fit. It’s easy to get carried away with the coloured pencils and let your imagination run wild, but make sure that what you draw out is physically feasible with the space you have.

These drawings will form the foundation of your bathroom remodelling and can be a huge help if you decide to hire a contractor.

Step 2 – Shopping!

This is probably the bit you’ve been looking forward to the most – it’s time to pick out everything you need for your new bathroom!

To help make sure you don’t forget anything, here’s a general shopping list:

  • Sinks
  • Taps
  • Flooring (tiles, wood etc.)
  • Walls (tiles or waterproof paint)
  • Shower (incl. enclosure, showerhead and taps)
  • Bath
  • Toilet
  • Lighting
  • Cabinetry
  • Mirror
  • Heating (radiator, towel warmer or underfloor)
  • Extras including loo roll holder, towel rails, shelves, additional storage, decorative items and toothbrush holders

It might sound like stating the obvious but consider your overall design and vision and select items that will work together cohesively when everything’s installed.

Step 3 – Hammer time

Before the new can go in, the old must come out. There’s an order to this too and removing the wrong things first could leave you without something important later on, you know, like a toilet. If you’re renovating your only bathroom, it might be worth checking with friends or neighbours whether you can use their facilities for a day or two.

Electrics

Before going anywhere near anything electrical, make sure to turn off the mains supply for your bathroom. Once everything’s safe, begin disconnecting and removing any electrical fittings. Seal off any loose wires using quick connectors or terminal blocks.

Furniture

Once the electrics are tackled and made safe, strip out any bathroom furniture you don’t want to keep, like old cabinets, railings, shelves or mirrors.

Plumbing

Finally, you can make a start on removing all the sanitaryware and plumbing fixtures. Disconnect each one from the water mains before working on it and make sure that the drainpipes are left in place until last, just in case of any mishaps!

Begin with the taps, then take out the porcelain units themselves, making sure to also trim away any remaining sealant.

It’s worth remembering that not everything you take out will need to be thrown away – some items could be recycled or even sold second hand if they’re in a good enough condition.

Step 4 – Walls and floor

By now, your bathroom’s probably looking a bit sorry for itself, but that’s progress, we promise. With everything out of the way, you can turn your attention to your walls and floor. Any old tiles or wallpaper will need to be removed. If you have a carpeted bathroom, we’ll reserve our judgements for now but advise you to also strip that out and put it right in the skip where it belongs.

To remove tiles:

  1. Take out the skirting boards or any tile surrounds
  2. Find a tile that feels loose or sounds hollow
  3. Hit it with a chisel or drill into it
  4. Use your new opening to work away at the rest of the tiles
  5. Clean away any remaining grout and dispose of your old tiles

Remember that before you reinstall anything, all surfaces will need to be cleaned and prepared. Tidying as you go can be a huge help.

Step 5 – Plumb

If you’re keeping the same layout for your bathroom, you can mostly skip this step. However, for you ambitious types taking on a whole new design, it’s time to fit some pipes.

Before we get started though, some general information:

  • Make sure you’re using the right type and size of pipes for what you’re installing, don’t assume you can reuse old piping
  • When installing pipes vertically, fit the cold on the right and the hot on the left, and when horizontally, put the cold below the hot – this helps anyone working on the pipes in the future and prevents heat from your hot pipes warming your cold water
  • Turn off your water supply at the mains to avoid a soaking

Refer carefully to your plans, make sure to precisely measure before fitting anything and gather all your tools beforehand. Start by removing any old pipework back to a point where you can install the new fittings and then introduce your new pipes.

If you need to turn the water back on after this point but before your new sanitaryware goes in, make sure to securely cap any pipes to prevent water escaping.

Step 6 – Wire

The next step in how to renovate a bathroom is one to be considered carefully – wiring. Electrics in the UK are tightly regulated for safety reasons, especially when it comes to bathrooms. So, any electrical work you undertake yourself needs to be done with the legal standards in mind and will then need to be inspected by a certified electrician before it can be used.

Alternatively, you could hire an accredited electrician to handle this step for you, potentially saving you a lot of hassle and stress.

If you choose to take on the wiring yourself, make sure to use the right types of cables and connections and approach any existing wiring with caution, particularly in an older property. Once again, disconnect your electrics at the fuse box before going anywhere near your wiring.

Step 7 – Walls

With your wiring sorted, it’s time to decorate your walls! This is the point in your bathroom remodelling where your new design will start to take shape.

Before you begin, make absolutely sure that your new wall coverings are suitable for a bathroom. They’ll be exposed to a lot of moisture and need to be waterproof. For example, you can buy special bathroom paint.

If you’re tiling, this step is a little easier, as your tiles will hide slight imperfections in your wall surfaces. Although, you should take the time to plan your tile placement to avoid having too many little offcuts and half tiles.

If you’re painting, however, you’ll need to make sure your walls are properly sanded and smoothed for a nice, neat finish.

Step 8 – Floor

With the walls sorted, it’s time to tackle the floor. If you’re installing a new shower tray or a or a panelled bathtub, you should get these installed first to save any complications later on.

Start by preparing the floor surface. Depending on whether you’re having tiles, wood, laminate or vinyl your preparation will look a little different, but it’s important to make sure your new floor has a suitable base to sit on. Once the surface is ready, begin fitting your new floor covering.

If you’re opting for a tiled shower floor, don’t forget that it will need to be graded to encourage water to flow towards the drain and a waterproof membrane will have to be fitted underneath your tiling to prevent water seeping through.

Step 9 – Make it a bathroom again!

This is the point in your bathroom remodelling where your room becomes functional again: installing your new sanitaryware.

Consider where each item will go to help decide which to install first. From a practical point of view, you may want to get your toilet installed first, for example, but if it then makes installing your shower more difficult, maybe reconsider.

Begin by fitting the porcelain items before attaching your new taps and running new pipework to the relevant points . We’d suggest plumbing in your new drains before connecting taps, just so any accidental leaks have somewhere to go.

Once everything’s fitted and plumbed in, turn your water supply back on, check for any leaks and test all your drains. If you spot any leaks, turn the water back off, check all your new fittings and maybe whip out the silicone where needed.

Step 10 – Decorate

With the serious stuff handled, you can put in the finishing touches. This is where you can add any decorative items you want, from stylish storage to wall hangings. Just make sure that everything is waterproof and won’t go mouldy after a few showers.

This is the cherry on top of your bathroom-shaped cake, and the final step in how to renovate a bathroom! If you’ve made it this far, well done, you’re officially a bathroom boss.
